Aristide Henri Esser, MD was born in 1930 in Java, Indonesia, lived through the Japanese occupation in World War II, and was afterwards educated in the Netherlands. He obtained his MD in 1955 from the University of Amsterdam Medical School, and specialized in Psychiatry and Neurology at the University of Leyden Psychiatric Clinics.
